Pubblichiamo l’appello che come associazione abbiamo indirizzato al Parlamento dell’Uruguay chiamato a pronunciarsi per convertire in legge il decreto presidenziale, emanato il 27 dicembre 2018, dal presidente dell’Uruguay Tabaré Vasquez, che vieta le corse coi galgo in tutto il territorio uruguaiano.
Ringraziamo il presidente Tabaré Vasquez e al suo team per aver ascoltato la richiesta di giustizia e di civiltà avanzata da GalgoLibreUy, da Proyecto Galgo Argentina, dalle associazioni uruguaiane e dagli cittadini uruguaiani e da tutto il movimento antiracing mondiale, di cui facciamo parte, che si battono contro la crudeltà intrinseca delle corse coi levrieri.
Ci appelliamo al Parlamento dell’Uruguay affinché faccia altrettanto e sancisca definitivamente questa scelta di civiltà che restituisce libertà, rispetto e dignità ai levrieri.
Un grazie speciale agli amici di GalgoLibreUy e Proyecto Galgos Argentina in prima linea in questa campagna per i diritti dei galgo.
Domani 18 dicembre alle ore 18.00 ci sarà una mobilitazione virtuale internazionale per chiedere con forza al Parlamento la legge che vieta le corse, mobilitazione organizzata da GalgoLibreUy, cui la nostra associazione con i nostri soci e adottanti parteciperà.
Alle ore 18.00 in tutto il mondo contemporaneamente ogni persona potrà dare il proprio supporto a questa mobilitazione pubblicando su Facebook, twitter, Instagram, una foto con un proprio animale con i seguenti hashtag:

Ci auguriamo che questa importante campagna riesca quanto prima ad ottenere lo storico risultato che nel dicembre 2016, ha portato all’abolizione delle corse in Argentina.
Noi daremo tutto il nostro aiuto possibile affinché la campagna abbia successo.
Di seguito la lettera indirizzata ai deputati del Parlamento dell’Uruguay.
Milan, 17th December 2020
For the attention of the Honorable Deputies of the Parliament of Uruguay,
We have been attentively following the efforts made by associations, politicians and others to ban racing with galgos definitely in Uruguay.
It was with much joy that we learned about the decision by the President of Uruguay dr. Tabaré Ramón Vázquez Rosas to ban racing with galgos in your country. Now it is up to yourselves to sanction this civilised choice, and we are appealing to you in that sense.
In Italy commercial greyhound racing has been banned for many years, and public opinion is not only opposed to racing, but is also very well disposed towards countries in which the barbarism of the exploitation of dogs for racing is forbidden.
There are also many associations in our country which rehome greyhounds and galgos exploited in other European countries. Thousands of these dogs have been rehomed in our homes, and it is also thanks to them that the exploitation to which they are subjected in the racing and betting worlds is considered unacceptable. So the end of racing in Uruguay would be seen as a very positive thing by many Italians.
Your decision to ban racing in your country would be a wonderful step forward in terms of civilisation, education in respecting animals and prevention of the criminal activities that have always been commonly associated with the world of racing and the exploitation animals.
Also, even where dogs are used legally for betting on races, crimes such as the use of doping are commonplace. In addition, betting feeds gambling addictions which are expensive and dangerous for society.
The decision to ban racing would be in line with the changes that have also been taking place elsewhere in the world. For example, in the 2018 the Macau Canidrome – which was the only legal track in South East Asia – closed its doors forever, and in the USA the people of Florida voted to phase out racing and close the tracks in that state, in an historic victory which dealt a deadly blow to greyhound racing in the USA.
In Latin America, after Argentina and your own country, a law proposal to ban dog racing has been presented in Parliament in Chile, and we are also expecting news from Brazil.
So there is a new wind blowing which bodes well and gives hope for these dogs, who are exploited in their tens of thousands in various parts of the world, and your contribution in giving them the respect they deserve would be be a decisive factor in helping them.
We fervently hope that you will support efforts to end greyhound and galgo racing definitely in Uruguay.
Please be their voice and give them back their dignity.
