Industria delle corse e combattimenti tra animali

In un documento del 2001, prodotto per la campagna che chiedeva l’abolizione del greyhound racing in Massachusetts, l’avvocato Erin Jackson scriveva:

“Yet in greyhound racing, just as in bullfighting, dogfighting, and cockfighting, animals are ultimately killed for the sake of entertainment. Although bullfighting is illegal in the United States, and dogfighting has been outlawed in every state, three states still permit cockfighting. Many of the types of abuse perpetrated in bullfighting, dogfighting, and cockfighting are common to greyhound racing as well. To make matters worse, enthusiasts romanticize each of these sports in a way that completely disregards the suffering the animals endure and the senseless deaths caused by these so-called forms of entertainment. Despite all of the abuses that greyhound racing shares in common with these animal fighting sports, greyhound racing remains legal in Massachusetts and sixteen other states, and is only explicitly outlawed in eight states.”

Dunque, il greyhound racing come i combattimenti tra animali. Questo paragone è azzardato? No, se guardiamo al numero di greyhound che vengono eliminati ogni anno e alle loro condizioni di vita. In entrambi i casi, gli animali vengono sfruttati e muoiono per il divertimento e il guadagno degli esseri umani.

Il trattamento riservato in tutti i paesi civili ai combattimenti tra animali dovrebbe essere dunque esteso all’industria del greyhound racing, che dovrebbe semplicemente essere chiusa.

E l’industria del greyhound racing dovrebbe essere considerata alla stregua di chi organizza e sfrutta i combattimenti tra animali. Infine nessuno dovrebbe avere rapporti di dialogo con l’industria del greyhound racing, come nessun amante degli animali ha rapporti con chi organizza combattimenti tra animali. Semplice, chiaro, coerente, efficace.

Infatti, nel Massachusettes il greyhound racing non c’è più!
